On June 28 & 29,
2008 Regional Training Director, Uwe Doose and Der Hundesport
Performance Klub hosted the Southwest Region “Training Helper Seminar”
with well known USA training helper, coach and competitor Bill Kulla.
This 2 day seminar was a landmark event as in the past most of our
regional seminars concentrated on trial helpers or dog training.
However, this particular seminar focused on club training helpers and
was well attended by 20 working teams and 19 spectators from six USA
member clubs and individuals from California, Nevada and Arizona. Also
attending were Southwest Region Board Members; Terry Fisk, Secretary and
Roanna Banducci, Regional Breed Warden and two members from the USA
Magazine editorial staff; Kathy Moacanin and Jennifer Acevedo.
Der Hundesport Klub
members and several attendees provided a variety of German Shepherd,
Malinois, Doberman and Donovan Pinscher dogs ranging in ages and
experience (4 months to adult SchH 3) for the training helpers as they
worked individually with Bill a number of times throughout the weekend.
During the course of the seminar Bill covered topics such as;
development of proper gripping and countering behavior, eliciting and
shaping barking behavior, balancing drives (prey/defense/fight),
teaching the hold and bark, teaching/maintaining the out, promoting
striking behavior, secondary work (blind searches, side transport, rear
transport), problem-solving: primary work (barking/biting),
problem-solving: secondary work (control) proper building of drives,
giving proper grips and working on countering behavior, channeling
prey/defense/fight drive, teaching the hold and bark, teaching and
maintaining the out. He also emphasized the importance of safe equipment
and altering the routine by mixing up the sequence
of trial routine exercises. Bill also demonstrated that the helper needs
to be able to switch their demeanor from friendly to nearly demon like
to evoke the appropriate response from the dogs.
Handlers also had an
opportunity to work with Bill as he reviewed safe handling techniques
during protection work, secondary obedience and proper timing of
correction and reward for proper behavior. Several novice handlers and
helpers that had an opportunity to handle not only their own dogs but
dogs of different ages experience and drive levels.
Highlights of the weekend included a great potluck lunch and a great
group of people in attendance. It was wonderful to see old friends, make
new acquaintances, share training ideas and brag about new puppies and
recent accomplishments.
Bill
also commented that it was a good group in attendance and that everyone
was open-minded and willing to learn.
This seminar
definitely sparked an interest in having more of its kind in the future.
A big round of thanks goes out to all
of the members of Der Hundesport Performance Klub for their hard work
hosting this event and those in attendance who showed their support of
the Southwest Region and the sport..
